Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked

The opening to the documentary. Aired in 2003, this documentary tells the history of comic books up to that point of airing.

Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked Part 1
As we learn from this first part; Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster try to sell their comic strip pitch of Superman during the Great Depression, with no luck. But then, when National Comics (later known as DC Comics) decides to sell brand new comic books instead of reprinting them, Siegel & Shuster's Superman is choosen, with great success. This leads to another creation of a superhero by Bob Kane; Batman.

Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked part 2
The success of Superman & Batman in the new medium of comic book superheroes leads a craze as more and more superheroes are created and sold. As DC becomes the biggest comic book publisher, Timely Comics (later known as Marvel Comics) becomes the upstart with wider ideas. The comic books start reflecting their kid readers with Robin the Boy Wonder & the creation of Captain Marvel (aka Shazam!) which leds to a lawsuit over how similar Captain Marvel was to Superman.

Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked Part 3
World War II had begun in Europe. Even though America was not fighting yet, it was the superheroes who were fighting the Nazis. Before America's introduction in the war, DC's Superman grabbed Hitler and took him to the League of Nations while Timely's new Captain America threw his right fist into Hitler's jaw. And then after America entered the war, DC creates the first female superhero called Wonder Woman. World War II made this era of comic books called "The Golden Age of Comic Books".

Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked Part 4
Even though the superheroes were fighting non-stop with the japanese and Nazis, advice was given from the comic book characters to their kid readers like recycling paper or spending a dime for war bonds. The idea of recycling scrap paper would lead many to collect the books of the Golden Age, which in turn is thankful for World War II. After the war and the victory was won...

Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked Part 5
After the war and onto the '50s, the comic book industry was at the greatest popularity. But the superheroes weren't doing good as most superheroes were cancelled and the interest changed to funny animals, teen comedies, westerns, gangsters & horror stories. After a lawsuit which led Siegel & Shuster to be fired for their Superman creation, the industry gets under by the U.S. Senate thanks to Dr. Fredric Wertham which leds to the Comics Code Authority. The restrications from the CCA made many publishers close down and the writers/artists losing their jobs. This creates the decline of comic books.

DC Comics found success in the updating of old characters like The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman & the Atom, which lead to the creation of the Justice League of America. But comic book history changes after a golf game with the publishers of both DC and Timely which leads Stan Lee to create the Fantastic Four & the Hulk. With Lee's suggestion, Timely is changed to Marvel.

Other than Lee, Jim Steranko brings surreal, expression, several art effects and pushes the limits of the Comics Code Authority with Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD. DC starts with Wonder Woman by updating her for 1968, all handled by Denny O'Neil. While hard, the update that turns her into a un-powered, karate kicking, Wonder Woman doesn't go so well. But O'Neil gets better luck with Batman as he brings back the dark nature of the character not seen at that time for thirty years. His work continues with Green Lantern/Green Arrow where he writes messages into the comic from the news of the '70s. Stan Lee writes three Spider-Man issues about drugs without the Comics Code approval and the reaction causes the Comics Code to change.

But three years prior, with the biz of the upcoming films, artist Neal Adams brought Siegel & Shuster back to DC Comics to make amends. With his help, their byline was restored on the Superman comics. But by the seventies, Superman wasn't entirly popular as that title went to the X-Men. And by the eighties, it was a then call for a darker hero. This is where newcomer Frank Miller comes in and starts his carear. First, he takes over and brings Daredevil to popularity, then he challenges his notion of non-lethal justice by reviving The Punisher.

Andrea Pazienza

http://www.heroinitiative.org/
Potete Romita e Kubert all'opera in questo filmato. Buona visione!
